Winnie Lai-Solarin has revealed that there are 415 grazing reserves in Nigeria and they are located in 21 states (2 In the Southern part) across the country. Winnie is the Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.President Muhammadu Buhari recently revealed that he instructed the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to provide the gazetted grazing routes and grazing areas for herdsmen. The president's revelation has since sparked reactions from Southern governors who had earlier banned open grazing in the region.
Winnie explained that there are 415 grazing reserves in 21 states across Nigeria. Winnie further stated that 141 of the grazing reserves are gazetted.
The ministry director added that of these 415 grazing reserves, only two are in the South and those two are located in the South-West (SW); One each in Ogun state and Oyo State.
Speaking further, Winnie revealed that the 141 reserves that are gazetted contain about 2.7 million hectares of land. All the grazing reserves cover 4,275,326 hectares of land, and the National Grazing Reserve Law is of 1965.
