Hunters from Saminaka village in the Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been scouring the forests in the area for bandits who attacked their home on Sunday, September 19, 2021, murdering six people.
According to a report by Daily Trust, most of the males in Saminaka who are hunters were out hunting when the bandits attacked in the early hours of Sunday.
Two of the victims, according to the publication, were married women.
“All the vigilantes and Yan Sakai in the area are currently searching for the assailants in the bush,” a villager said.
The invasion on Saminaka happened just 24 hours after bandits attempted to take Tangaza town but were defeated.
The bodies of 13 bandits who attacked and killed people in Tangaza town on Saturday were slaughtered and burned by an enraged mob, according to Daily Trust.
Abubakar Sanusi, the state's police spokesman, told journalists that he had yet to receive an official report of the occurrence.
"On the claim, I have yet to get official information. And as you know, we don't normally speak based on unconfirmed reports, " Mr. Sanusi explained, adding that "there is a system we follow to examine situations, and the outcome will be revealed soon."
Mr. Abubakar, on the other hand, faulted the villagers of Tangaza who had previously taken the law into their own hands by executing suspected bandits.
Bandits raided a community in the Tangaza Local Government Area on Saturday, killing one person and kidnapping many others, according to authorities in Sokoto.
In my opinion, the recent assault on bandits by local vigilantes and hunters is the easiest way to end banditry and kidnapping in the North.
The hunters and vigilantes are very familiar with the environment the criminals operate.
The government should empower vigilantes and hunters with sophisticated weapons and give them paramilitary training to address the insecurity in the country.
Every community should also set up its own security personnel, comprising of vigilantes and hunters to get rid of bandits in the country.
