The task of battling criminality and other forms of unlawful activities in the country should not be left for the government alone. It is good to note that the Nigerian federal government and the various state governments are putting in serious efforts to ensure every form of criminality and proscribed activity is a thing of the past. Recall that the federal government has continuously equipped men of the Nigerian army and other security operatives with sophisticated weapons bought from advanced countries and even the state governments have also donated vehicles to support the fight against criminal activities in the country.
That being said, the association of hunters in Nigeria has decided to aid the government by showing interest in battle criminality especially in the forests where they have a good knowledge of the terrain. The Osun State chapter in a recent report has issued a seven days ultimatum to criminals using forests as hideouts to vacate the forest or face their wrath. This ultimatum was contained in a recent report by Punch Newspapers.

According to the report, the chairman of the group, Ahmed Nureen, handed down the ultimatum while receiving more hunters into the fold at a meeting held in Ikirun, Osun State on Saturday. The chairman of the group also pointed out that they have already identified several of the unconventional routes that criminals usually took while carrying out their nefarious activities in the State.
However, there are two key statements to note with regards to this ultimatum.
1. They are not after any particular group or religion.
This statement is indeed a statement that signifies absolute clarity of intention and purpose. This statement will go a long way to pacify groups that think this ultimatum is for them. For example, the Fulani herdsmen in the state who could be making use of their forest for the grazing of their cattle will understand that this ultimatum is not for them unless they have evil intentions they carry out in the forest. This ultimatum is solely for criminals who are making use of the forest and as such those who have clear intentions should go about their normal business.
2. They are working with security operatives.
This is indeed another notable statement because it means the hunters will also be properly guided to avoid abusing their privilege. Hence working with security operatives will make the whole operation have a good legal outlook because the job of recognized security outfits is to enforce the law.
It is indeed commendable as the association of hunters in Osun State is set to help the government tackle criminality in their state. This will help reduce the rate of criminal activities especially those that make use of the forests as their hideouts.
