Ceramides—The Skin's Natural Shield

Ceramides are a family of fatty molecules called lipids naturally found in skin cells and are 50% of the epidermis(outer layer of the skin). Ceramides play vital roles in nervous system development. In cosmetics, they have skin health benefits and are used in lotions, shampoos, makeup products and deodorants. Ceramides help form the skin's natural barrier and help the skin to retain moisture. They protect the skin from environmental aggressors such as pollution and irritation. Without Ceramides, the skin becomes prone to itching, irritation and dryness. Ceramides can be depleted by environmental factors, hot water, soaps and chemicals. Using skincare products that are formulated with Ceramides help restore the skin's natural barrier, which then increase the skin's moisture levels. The difference between Synthetic and Natural Ceramides is Natural Ceramides occur only in the skin while Synthetic Ceramides are found in most skincare products. This does not make any difference in terms of efficacy or quality, the skin can benefit greatly as long as Ceramides are replenished.

Benefits Of Ceramides

In skincare, Ceramides replenish the natural lipids that are lost due to harsh environmental factors, the natural ageing process and use of products that dry the skin. They restore moisture, strengthen the skin's natural barrier and help protect it against harm from strange elements. People with conditions such as eczema and psoriasis have fewer Ceramides in the outer layer of the skin compared to those that have normal skin. Ceramides are effective in treating these conditions by using products that contain Ceramides, making the skin supple and moist.

In haircare, Ceramides are added to hair products because they bind to the hair shaft making it less porous thereby giving the hair a better shine.
