Don't Cause Skin Cancer To Yourself_ Avoid These Five Dangerous Ingredients Found In Beauty Products

In cosmetic, it is important to be careful of careful what you apply to your skin. Today thousands of brands offer cosmetics whose composition is harmful to our body, but also to the environment. Since the Nigerian Government has no laws to regulate this cosmetic products, they find their way easily into the Nigerian market to destroy the consumers' skin.

Here is a list of cosmetic ingredients to avoid to maintain beautiful skin and a healthy body.

1. BHA and BHT

BHA (butylhydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants used in lipsticks, moisturizers and other cosmetics. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as a possible risk. It is also classified as a Category 1 priority substance, based on evidence, that they interfere with hormonal function.

Long-term exposure to large doses of BHT is toxic in mice and rats, causing liver, thyroid and kidney problems and affecting lung function and blood clotting. BHT can act as a tumor promoter in certain situations. Evidence suggests that high doses of BHT can mimic estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, and prevent the expression of male sex hormones, causing harmful reproductive effects.

2. PPD

P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is a dye derived from coal tar. You'll find it in hair dyes. Indeed, PPD is recognized as being carcinogenic to humans. Despite its efficacy in coloring hair, PPD has a reputation for negative side effects. Most commonly, PPD can cause reactions ranging from mild skin irritation to more severe allergic contact dermatitis.

3. DEA and its derivatives

Diethanolamine (DEA) and its derivatives are used to make creamy or soapy cosmetics. DEA also acts as a pH adjuster. DEA is mainly found in moisturizers and sunscreens, while cocamide and lauramide are found in soaps, cleansers and shampoos.

DEA and its compounds cause mild and moderate irritation of the skin and eyes. In laboratory experiments, exposure to high doses of these chemicals has been shown to cause liver cancer and precancerous changes in the skin and thyroid . The European Union classifies DEA as harmful because of the danger of serious damage to health resulting from prolonged exposure . DEA compounds can also react with nitrites in cosmetic products to form nitrosamines, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as possible human carcinogens. Nitrites are sometimes added to products as anti-corrosion agents or may be present as contaminants. Degradation of certain chemicals used as preservatives in cosmetics can release nitrites when the product is exposed to air. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency classifies cocamide DEA as dangerous for the environment due to its acute toxicity to aquatic organisms and its bioaccumulation potential.

5. Parabens

The famous parabens are used as preservatives in the majority of products in the classic cosmetic industry. They are suspected of being endocrine disruptors and of damaging reproduction in men .

Endocrine disruptors are substances or chemical mixtures capable of modifying the functioning of the hormonal system. They are likely to cause harmful effects both in exposed individuals and in their offspring. They are often likely to have undesirable health effects by altering functions such as growth , development , behavior and mood , production, use and storage of energy, rest function ( sleep ), hemodynamics and blood circulation , as well as sexual and reproductive .

Since we know that parabens are endocrine disruptors, many products boast that they no longer have any in their composition. But still be careful because some cosmetics have replaced them with equally toxic ingredients.

5. Triclosan

Known for its antibacterial properties, triclosan is widely used in toothpaste, face cleansers and deodorants. It is an endocrine disruptor and is thought to make bacteria more resistant to antibiotics . This product is also harmful to fish and wild animals.
