It is popularly said that “You are what you eat” The food you eat plays a huge part in your health. So many people do not know that there are so many things we eat or drink that harm our eyes. Our eyes are vascular, meaning that it is important to have a heart-healthy diet to keep the blood vessels that service our eyes healthy. In this article, we look at some things that may affect our eyes in the future if we continue to take them.
According to RXOPTICAL, the following foods are not healthy to the eye.
1 Dressing, Toppings and Condiments
There are certain toppings that we store in our refrigerator doors like mayonnaise, salad dressing, or jelly. They are all high in fat and it is not healthy for the eyes. Try using natural flavors like green vegetables or toppings that are packed with vitamin C, rather than using those toppings for flavor on your next sandwich, burger, or salad.
2 Plain Colored Or White Foods
White foods like pasta, white bread, rice, and flour tortillas offer almost no nutritional benefit, just simple carbohydrates that give a rush of energy that is followed by a crash. If at all you must eat these foods, be sure to add greens and foods that are rich in omega-3 to the meal to provide yourself with nutritional benefits. Alternatively, you can swap them with healthy grains.
3 Fatty Meat
We know that sausages and red meats are often convenient to purchase, but are mostly full of chemical preservatives, salt, fat, and cholesterol which are not healthy to the eyes. Rather than consuming fatty meats, try adding lean meats like fresh turkey, which is full of zinc and protein. Salmon is another good alternative as well, as it is an omega-3 rich food.
In our society today, many take margarine as a healthy alternative to butter but it is full of trans fats that can adversely affect your cholesterol. Instead of Margarine, why not use coconut, avocado, or olive oil to avoid trans fats.
5 Saturated Fats
It is true that Junk foods are delicious but can cause serious issues to the eye if you consume too many. Instead of eating French fries, cookies, or potato chips, which are all full of saturated fats, swap them out for healthier unsaturated fats.
