Ochronosis, a skin disorder characterized by "disfiguring and irreversible" blue-black lesions on exposed skin, can be caused by this skin-bleaching chemical. Mercury can be found in illegally imported skin lighteners, which can poison adults and children, and is especially dangerous during pregnancy.

Exfoliants and perfumes contain BHA, which is suspected to be a human carcinogen. BHA damages the liver and promotes stomach tumors such as papillomas and carcinomas in animals. In terms of fragrance, the European Union deems it to be dangerous.
3. Lauryl sulfate (sodium lauryl sulfate) (SLS).

Skin irritation, canker sores, disruptions of the skin's natural oil balance, and eye impairment have all been linked to SLS. It's also thought to be a key cause of acne (particularly cystic acne) around the mouth and chin.
Perfume, cologne, conditioner, shampoo, body wash, and moisturizers are just a few examples. Some scent compounds are known neurotoxins, and many of them can cause skin irritation. Allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and possibly reproductive system consequences have been linked to fragrance blends.

Parabens, which mimic estrogen, are linked to breast cancer, skin cancer and reduced sperm count. Products that are free of parabens will also be labeled as such. Ingredients having the suffix "paraben" should be avoided.
