If you're one of the millions of people who wear contact lenses, you're well aware of the several advantages they offer, such as the ability to see without the distractions that glasses often bring. However, you may be unaware that you are making blunders.
Here are some healthy contact lens dos and don'ts:
1. Before touching your lenses, always wash your hands.
In fact, before touching your eyes, you should always wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Make sure you clean them well.
To eliminate any substances that have built up on your lenses, clean them at the end of each day. And, once they've been cleaned, make sure they're placed in their case with fresh solution.
3. Sleeping with your contacts on is not a good idea.
Patients have left lenses in for so long that they have dried to the point of "gluing" to the eyeballs. Removing them now risks tearing the top layer of the eye away, resulting in painful corneal ulcers.
4. Showering in them isn't a good idea.
Also, before going swimming or into a hot tub, make sure your contacts are removed.
5. Always use a specialized contact lens solution - and never water.
Different preservatives are used in different types of contact lens solution. So, follow the doctor's instructions and don't reuse the solution.
6. Replace your lenses on a regular basis.
According to a recent poll, nearly half of all contact lens wearers keep their lenses in for longer than they should, increasing their risk of infection or problems. Always adhere to the doctor's recommended replacement schedule.
7. Get your eyes checked at least once a year.
Every year, you should evaluate not just your lens fit but also your eye health. A dilated eye exam can identify eye and other health problems including high blood pressure and diabetes.
8. Don't wait until you have an issue to get help.
The key to successful treatment of any health problem is early discovery.
