The doctrine on the use of Dyes on hair

A dye is a colourant especially one that has an affinity to the substrate to which it is applied. i.e it is used to tint, stain, shade or streak to the surface, substance or place to which it's applied.

The question here now is whether the use of Dyes on hair is permissible Islamically or not.The answer is,its permitted to dye your hair to any color you want as a Muslim brother or sister with natural or modern dyes that are not harmful to you so long as the dye is not black that is used to cover grey hair. And does not involve imitation of the disbelievers also proven to be harmless medically. There is no differentiation with respect to age or gender on this. For the old ones and those with grey hair at young age, dyeing the hair before the grey hair appears is permitted but not with the use of black dye even after the grey hair appears. The materials to be used must be pure.So do well to check for ingredients.

Changing hair to pure black is not permitted for men or women because the prophet(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:"change this grey hair but avoid black." narrated by Muslim(2102). Another Hadith was narrated by Abu Dawood (4212) from Ibn 'Abbas who said:the messenger of Allah(S.A.W) said: There will be people at the end of time who will dye their hair black like the crops of birds. They will never smell the fragrance of paradise.

It was narrated by Abu Dawood(4211) from Ibn 'Abbas who said:A man who had dyed his hair with henna passed by the prophet(S.A.W) & he said: how handsome this is.Then another who died his own with henna and kayan(a plant from Yemen which produces a reddish black dye)passed by & he said:this is more handsome. Then another who dyed his hair yellow passed by and he said:this is more handsome than all the others.

Lastly we should note the general principle with regards to matters of adornment & beautification in which we are not allowed to do anything that involves forbidden kinds of imitation(imitating the kuffar or immoral people). This is Haram because the prophet(S.A.W) said: whosoever imitates a people is one of them. As narrated by Abu Dawood(4031) classed as saheeh by albani.

May Allah forgive me in anyway I must have erred and the entire umma.Amen
