Who would have thought we’d be wearing masks outside of Halloween and home spa days? Most states are advising or requiring citizens to wear face coverings should they need to go outside, but as the novel coronavirus continues to spread, personal protective gear has become scarce.
Although you can order protective masks from some retailers (just look at the brands shifting production lines to help fight COVID-19), chances are you already have the materials you need at home to make your own.
- 2 pieces of fabric, 9.5″ x 6.5″ (preferably a non-stretch cotton like an old pillowcase)
- 2 elastic hair ties, both cut once
- Sewing machine (or can use a needle and thread)
- Pins (optional)
Step 1: Put your two pieces of fabric one on top of the other and pin in place.
Step 2: Sew the two pieces together around the perimeter of the fabric, leaving about 1/4-inch seam allowance and sewing each end of the elastics at the corners, so they’re in between the fabric. Leave a hole to flip the mask right-side out.
Step 3: Flip the mask right-side out. Create three even pleats and pin in place.
Step 4: Sew the pleats down at either side of your mask. Done!
No-Sew Folded Bandana Mask
- 1 square bandana
- 2 elastic hair ties
Step 1: Fold your bandana in half. Then fold the bottom to the middle line and the top half over completely.
Step 2: Thread your hair ties on to both sides, about 3 inches from the ends.
Step 3: Tuck one open end of the bandana into the other.
Step 4: Place over your mouth and nose, securing the elastics over your ears. Done!
- 1 sock (an old match-less sock that you won’t mind cutting up is perfect!)
Step 1: Cut a 1-inch slit at the bottom part of the ankle of the sock. (You can make this bigger depending on the fit.)
Step 2: Cut two V’s at the toe of the sock, one on top and one on the bottom.
Step 3: Place the ankle loop over one ear and the toe loop over the other. Done!
Pro tip: Use a bigger sock (like a men’s sock) for a better fit!
