Neem is a natural herb that comes from the neem tree, other names for which include Azadirachta indica, dongayaro (in Nigeria) and Indian lilac. It is native to the Indian subcontinent.

Neem is known as a natural pesticide and insecticide in some parts of the world, but people also use it in hair, skin and dental products.

Across the globe, in various cultures, neem has been well appreciated and used for it's beauty benefits.

Neem for Hair:

Neem is a herb that has been known to promote hair growth, reduce hair fall, give volume and shine to the hair.

Neem leaf powder can be used as a strengthening hair mask. Just mix the neem powder with water and add coconut oil to form a paste for the hair mask.

Neem for Skin:

Neem is best known for its anti-aging properties, due to the vitamins and fatty acids in it which promotes and maintains the skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Hence, makes your skin look youthful and radiant. It's anti-fungal properties are beneficial in treating some skin infections like rashes...It also has antioxidant properties, which protects the skin from harmful UV rays, pollution and other environmental factors.

Neem leaves could be boiled in water and used to clean the skin or neem oil can be used as a body oil.

Neem As A Detox:

Though one cannot deny the extremely bitter taste of neem leaves, they are still excellent for detoxifying your liver, purifying blood and also it boosts digestion. Consuming neem leaves on a daily basis is known to destroy bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in the intestinal tract and cleanse the colon, further improving a smoother digestion. A healthy liver and clean intestine improve the radiance of your skin.

Just mix the neem powder in hot water or boil neem leaves in water to drink as tea, with lemon or lime and honey(optional). In some parts of Nigeria, Neem with other herbs like, basil (scent leave), bitter leaf...have been used in treatment of malaria by locals.


Neem is a highly medicinal plant with a wide range of uses for health, skin and hair. It is very beneficial to incorporate it into your beauty routine, as a hair mask, face toner, skin and hair oil, etc. Neem is very essential in achieving a natural glow up and maintaining a youthful look.
