See How To Make Palm Nut Soup Popularly Known As Banga Soup

Banga Soup is also called Palm nut. It is a soup made from the palm fruit common to the African community. In Ghana, palm nut soup is called dedetsi by the people in the Volta Region, and abenkwan by the Akans. In Nigeria, it is called Banga soup, of Akwa, how aimed, or Mizuno ibiedi. The delicacy is used to accompany other dishes such as fufu, banku, rice, and so on.

Nigerian Banga Soup or Ofe Akwu is native to the Niger Delta and the South Eastern parts of Nigeria.

Banga soup is one of the best nourishing soups you can make with palm nut. All it takes is an assortment of spice flavorings, an assortment of meat and fish, and finishing it off with a touch of belief to elevate this soup. It’s an easy recipe that delivers terrific results.

It is a delectable Nigerian cuisine with a pleasant, nutty flavor. This delightful soup will leave you licking your fingers. Palm-nut (also known as palm kernel) is the fruit of the oil palm tree native to West and Central Africa and some Asian countries. It lends a delightfully nutty and ethnic flavor to this soup

The preparation method of Banga soup varies from tribe to tribe. The Igbo version is called Ofe Akwu which includes the addition of Ugu or Scent leaves which is without in the Delta version. There’s also the Efik version called Abak Atama.

1. Banga (palm nut) 1 bowl

2. 2 tablespoons dry pepper

3. Banga spices

4. 3 tablespoon crayfish

5. 1 big onion

6. 4 pieces of fresh fish

7. salt

8. starch 1 bowl

9. 2 cubes Maggi

10. water


1. Wash thoroughly the Banga. Boil for 30mins to soften. Mash the banana wash with hot water drained. Wash again and drained. Put the drained Banga on the cooker.

2. Add the dried pepper, crayfish, Banga spices, onion. Add to the palms up boil for 10mins. Wash the fresh fish with salt, and water. Add it into soup with a pinch of salt. Allow boiling for 20 minutes. It is ready to be served.
