The Benefits And Side Effects Of Eating Organ Meats

Organ meat refers to everything in an animal that can be distinguished as 'offal' Offal is derived from the term 'off' 'fall' meaning everything that falls off from an animal when it is butchered.

This includes the tail,liver,heart, kidneys, intestines etc. Many People like to eat these portions in a meat because they are actually nutritious. According to medical news today, organ meat is not a popular part of western diet, however they are popular in our country, Nigeria.

Do you eat organ meat ? Which of the organ meat is your favourite? In most cases,we use them to prepare 'nkwobi' and pepper soup.

We want to highlight the benefits and the side effects of eating them. We want to consider the liver, kidneys, heart and intestines.

1. The liver.

The liver is very rich in vitamin A, this vitamin is a powerful antioxidants which helps to protect the body from a lot of diseases that is caused by inflammations. The liver is also a rich source of B complex vitamins such as B12, folate, iron, chromium, copper and zinc.

The B vitamins found in the liver are particularly helpful in protecting the heart against cardiovascular infections. They also contain nutrients that help in improving haemoglobin level in the blood

2. The Kidney.

The kidneys are also rich sources of B complex vitamins. They also contain essential minerals such as iron, copper, zinc .

3. Heart

The heart contains folate, iron, zinc and selenium. It is also a good source of vitamin B2, B6, and B12. The heart is also a great source of Co enzyme Q10. This is an antioxidant that helps to protect against heart diseases and also help to reduce signs of aging.

4. The intestines.

The intestines is also a good source of proteins and minerals.

Side effects of eating these meats.

1. Offal meats contains a lot of saturated fats.

The major drawback behind the use of these offal meats is that they may contain too much saturated fats.

2. They may also transmit bacteria to us.

If these meats are not properly washed, they may transmit bacteria to us. For this reason they should be properly washed.

3. There is possibility of getting diseases through some chemicals used on the animals
