In this era, where foods are expensive and costly, people tend to eat anything that comes their way, but not all things are beneficial to the body, some of these foods are very harmful to the health of man.
We hereby present to foods that are bad for your health.
1. Sugary drinks
It is well documented that excess sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is correlated with weight gain,1 and a few sips provide a sugar high from which we soon come crashing down, only to crave more.
Beyond these, there are other impacts on the body we should be concerned about.
This is because sugary drinks provide large doses of quickly accessed added sugars, such as fructose and glucose, which the body has to work hard to rapidly metabolise. This places immense strain on body organs and systems. Long-term, this may lead to various issues with health, including cardiometabolic diseases such as heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.
2. Fried, grilled, or broiled food
When you fry, grill or bake foods -- also called dry-heat cooking -- foods produce substances called advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
Higher levels of AGEs have been linked to insulin resistance, stress on the body's cells and inflammation, according to the study authors. These are troublemakers in terms of diabetes risk.
Insulin is a hormone that helps blood sugar from food get into cells for energy. Without insulin, or with insulin resistance, too much sugar remains in the blood. This can lead to serious problems for the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.
"When you look at people with chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes or dementia put on a high-AGE diet or a low one, those on the low-AGE diet show signs of decreasing inflammation.
3. Most fruit juices
In fact, consuming them regularly may help shorten your life, researchers say.
"Older adults who drink more sugary beverages, which include fruit juice as well as sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages, may be at risk of dying earlier," said study author Jean Welsh. She is an associate professor at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
"Efforts to decrease consumption of sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages should also include fruit juices, and these efforts need to include adults as well as children," Welsh said.
4. Ice cream
Many ice creams are highly processed and include ingredients like artificial flavors and additives.
Some artificial ingredients and preservatives have been associated with negative health effects, while others have been proven safe.
Notably, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently banned seven artificial flavorings, including benzophenone, given their association with cancer in animal studies. These compounds were common in ice cream and other desserts.
Processed meat is generally considered unhealthy.
It has been linked with diseases like cancer and heart disease in numerous studies.
There is no doubt that processed meat contains many harmful chemicals that are not present in fresh meat.
Even though unprocessed meat can be healthy and nutritious, the same is not true for processed meats.
Studies show that people who eat processed meats have a higher risk of many serious ailments, including colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
6.Most fast food meals
Despite their low prices, fast foods may contribute to disease risk and harm your general wellness. You should especially watch out for fried items.
White bread, enriched or not, contains very little fiber. Fiber is important to your health and necessary for keeping your digestive system functioning properly. As roughage that your body can't digest, it helps move the food you've eaten through your stomach, intestines and then out of your body to keep you regular.
Coffee containing caffeine can cause insomnia, nervousness and restlessness, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting, increased heart and breathing rate, and other side effects.
9. Breakfast cereals
Most breakfast cereals are loaded with sugar and refined grains. High sugar consumption is harmful and may increase your risk of several diseases. Learn how to spot hidden added sugar in your diet and get tips, tools, and healthy recipes.
