How many of us have ever thought about the fact that crayfish actually has nutrients it gives to the body? Most of us do not even consider it as food, we majorly see it as what we use to add flavour and deliciousness to our food.
It recently occurred to me that we never really talk about crayfish and the abundant nutrients it blesses the body with each time we cook with it, so I did some research, and I will tell you all I learned about this amazing food.
Crayfish is a seafood. It is in the same family with prawns, crabs, and lobsters, which is why you can find crabs and prawns in your crayfish sometimes.
It is also a type of fish, though it is not in the same cadre as mackerel (Titus), tilapia and other bigger fishes. Crayfish feeds on dead sea animals, sea plants and wood from wrecked ships in the seas.
Crayfish offers many nutritional benefits to the body, but the 3 major health benefits it offers the body are:
1. It is very good for the heart and helps to lower high blood pressure. Just one handful of crayfish contains 202.3 milligrams of potassium. Potassium is very good for your heart, it helps to regulate your heartbeat and helps to widen your blood vessels so that blood can flow through freely, thereby lowering blood pressure.
If just one handful of crayfish contains 202.3 milligrams of potassium which is about 20% of the required daily dosage for potassium, that means cooking your breakfast, lunch and dinner with one handful each guarantees that your body gets almost all the potassium it needs everyday.
2. It is very good for your bones and helps to prevent bone diseases. Regular and consistent use of crayfish in most of your dishes helps to keep your bones strong and healthy. It also helps to prevent your bones from losing density. Loss of density in bones is one of the major causes of bone issues like arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatism.
This is because crayfish contains abundant amounts of calcium and magnesium which are the most important nutrients needed for building your bones and making them strong.
3. It contains a whole lot of nutrients that help to keep your body healthy. Crayfish is a whole meal on its own, you can decide to eat basically just crayfish and water for one week and your body will still be adequately nourished.
This is because it contains all the major nutrients the body needs such as Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, protein, carbohydrates, potassium, magic, manganese, vitamin B12, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, iron, copper, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5 and vitamin B6.
This is why it is highly recommended by medical experts that children from at least 6 months old should be fed with meals that contain some amount of crayfish. It helps to provide them the necessary nutrients they need to grow properly. It helps in the development of their brain, proper formation of their bones, proper development of their private parts etc. It also helps their eyesight to be healthy.
