Grasshopper is the insect we normally see around us with black compound eyes, big head, limbs and feathers.
They belong to the Orthoptera group, as well as Crickets and Locusts.
They are commonly referred to as Chapulines by the Mexican and is a highly regarded diet in Mexico.
We do consider Grasshoppers as ordinary insects which only eats up leafs and could be a trait to Farmers.
But we never considered it's nutritional value if to be consumed as a diet.
Here are 5 benefits of eating Grasshopper:
1. They are highly rich in Proteins:
It will shock you to know that Grasshoppers contain much proteins than meat.
Analysis and Studies have shown that Grasshoppers have between 70% and 77% of proteins while Meat has between 50% and 57%, according to an article of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM).
Although Grasshopper is a good substitute for Meat, great amount is required to be able to supply the same amount of protein a few grams of Meat would supply.
2.It makes for a healthy Nervous System:
According to studies by the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Grasshoppers supply vitamin B1 and B12 to our diet, which aids for a healthy digestive and nervous system.
3. They are Antibacterial effective:
The same studies by the IPN have shown that Grasshoppers contain Polysaccharide called Chitin, which has antibacterial properties, which is in accordance with a study published by the Rafael Urdaneta University in Vanazuella.
4. They digest easily:
Another important benefits of eating Grasshopper is that unlike other food substances, they are easily digested in the body.
A release on the properties of insects by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has stated that for instance; if a Grasshopper contains 62.96% of total protein, 89.63% is digestible.
5. They boast our Energy Supply:
Grasshoppers supply more energy as compared to Cereals and Wheat. With a little of it, you can be strengthened to carry out your daily activities.
According to the same UNAM, it can be an excellent option for a mid-afternoon snack.
