The heaviest onion weighs 8.5 kg (18 lb 11.84 oz) and was grown by Tony Glover (UK). It was weighed at the Harrogate Autumn flower show in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK, on 12 September 2014. Tony Glover has been growing onions for years and finally achieved the record.
He gave them a nitrogen-rich food and have to make sure the humidity was just right,’ said the 49-year-old. He also got grow lights fitted to [the greenhouse] inside to simulate the sun when the days get shorter or when the weather isn’t very good. Mr Glover says it took him nearly a year to grow the super-vegetable but he loves what he does.
Tony Glover has smashed the existing record for his whopping vegetable, which weighs an eye-watering 18lbs and 11oz and measures 32 inches around its widest part.
When recipes call for a large onion, on average they mean around 12 ounces. But Mr Glover’s whopper was almost 25 times that size.
That one onion is large enough to make 250 onion bhajees, French onion soup for 36 people or 50 portions of onion rings.
Well, below are some photos of the biggest onion ever
