Bread is the most favorite and popular store bought food in Nigeria, bread is very easy to make at home but most people do not want to try making it at home because, they believe that buying it is more cheaper but the truth is that making your own bread at home, is far cheaper than buying it plus you can get to decide on the ingredients to add. If you are the type that does not need sugar you will get the option to reduce it in your recipe, but you cannot reduce the recipe in a store bought bread. Also homemade bread is fresh and healthy.
Today i am going to show you how to make bread at home, with a stove and gas top including oven, so if you don't have an oven you can still enjoy delicious homemade bread, and even though you have an oven you can still enjoy it so let's get started.
Ingredients You Need
550 grams of Bread flour (You can substitute with plain flour but bread flour is preferable)
30 grams of sugar (you can reduce or increase it to your taste)
7 grams of dried yeast
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
I teaspoon of salt
300 Milligram of lukewarm water
The Preparation Process
The first step to activate the yeast, get some Lukewarm water, make sure the water is not too hot and not too cold. Hot water will kill the yeast and cold water will not activate the yeast. Pour half of the sugar into the water and add the yeast then whisk to combine them and set aside.
Mix 500 grams of the flour with a pinch of salt and the rest of the sugar and set aside, then mix a little bit of lukewarm water with the vegetable oil.
Check on the yeast, when it’s risen, add the water and oil mixture into the yeast mixture. Now pour in the flour and sugar mixture and start mixing with your hand or mixer.
Mix the batter until you get a sticky and stretchy dough. You don't have to worry If it is too stretchy because it will make your bread very soft. Your consistency should be a bit thicker than the picture below. I didn't remember to take a final photo.
Now pour the remaining flour onto a clean and smooth surface, and transfer the dough to the surface then begin to mix the dough with the flour until you get a thick, smooth and stretchy dough that is no longer sticky. If the flour is not enough add more to make sure that the dough is no longer sticky, but stretchy. Don't over mix the dough because that will hinder the rising process. You can mix it for about 6 to 8 minutes.
Get a big bowl and grease it with vegetable oil then put the dough into the bowl, and cover it with a thick towel then put it in a dark and warm place like your oven, or microwave and leave it for about 45 minutes to one hour.
You can also put it in any place in your home that is warm, if you don't have an oven or microwave. After 45 minutes check on the dough and you will see that it has double in size. Punch the dough in the middle to let out trapped air.
Gently remove the dough from the bowl and transfer unto a clean surface. Knead your dough again for 2 minutes, do not over work.
Grease a pan with butter and transfer the dough into the pan. Cover with a thick towel and put it in a dark place. Leave it for 40 to 45 minutes to rise for the second time.
20 minutes before the 45 minutes is up, preheat your oven to 220 degrees Celsius/ 200 for fan assisted.
Now bring the dough out and you will see that it has double in size again.
Put it in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the bread is brown at the top. It you don't like brown bread you can check on it after 20 to 25 minutes, to take it out and your bread is ready to enjoy.
If you don't have an oven you can follow this steps
Get a big pot that will contain your pan and put some sand to cover the under of the pot, the sand should not be too much and too small, just enough to cover the under of the pot and prevent the pot from burning.
Put the sand on fire and cover the pot, when the sand is hot open the pot and put your pan into it, then cover the pot and let the bread bake on medium heat for 30 minutes.
Immediately you remove it from the oven rub some butter on it when it is still hot, as the butter will melt and penetrate into the bread to make it moist and more yummy.
And your moist, yummy and delicious bread is ready to enjoy.
So this is how to make bread at home.
