3 Tasty Nigerian Soups You Should Eat Regularly To Stay Healthy

Nigeria is blessed with lots of delicious and nutritious foods. Soup is a staple meal in many homes. It is often accompanied by swallows such as eba, pounded yam or fufu. Nigerian soups are made with vegetables that contain nutrients that are essential for healthy living.

In this article I will share 3 Nigerian soups that you should never joke with. These soups are made with vegetables that contain essential vitamins and nutrients that promote good health. These soups are;

1.      Afang soup

Afang soup is also known as vegetable soup. It is made from leafy green vegetables. The vegetable used in making this tasty delicacy include; ugu leaves, okazi leaves and waterleaf. These vegetables contain phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that make them an excellent addition to your regular diet.

Some of the vitamins and minerals found in leafy green vegetables include; vitamin C, vitamin A, magnesium, iron, calcium, fiber and vitamin K. leafy green vegetables are healthy and rich in antioxidants that help to prevent a lot of diseases. Eating foods like afang soup that contains leafy green vegetables lowers your risk of having cardiovascular disease or suffering from age-related cognitive decline.

2.      Okra soup

Okra soup is one of the types of ‘draw soup’ eaten by Nigerians. It is made with okra and other vegetables like ugu and uziza. Okra is rich in a lot of essential vitamins and nutrients.

Okra contains magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, fiber and vitamin B6.

Okra contains lectin, a protein that has anti-cancer properties. Eating okra lowers your risk of suffering from cancer. okra is also very effective in lowering blood sugar levels. Pregnant women are also advised to regularly consume okra during pregnancy because it lowers the risk of neural tube defect which might affect the brain of the developing fetus.

3.      Egusi soup

Egusi soup is made using melon seeds locally known as egusi. Egusi soup is a popular type of soup that is eaten by many people across the country. Egusi contains fiber, carbohydrates, iron, zinc and phosphorus, minerals that are essential for healthy living.

Egusi lowers blood sugar levels and helps in preventing diabetes. Eating egusi also helps in lowering cholesterol levels thus reducing your risk of heart disease.
