Tomato, a natural and cheap source for the control of hypertension

Hypertension also called raised or high blood pressure is a condition in which the blood vessels experience persistently raised pressure. It is created when the force of blood pushing against the walls of the artery is too high as the heart pumps.

According to World Health Organization (W.H.O), about 1.13 billion people worldwide have hypertension. This condition is caused by lifestyle factors such as high intake of salt, smoking, excessive stress, chronic diseases like diabetes, kidney problems, etc. Hypertension is basically a health challenge that is normally managed just like diabetes especially when it is not detected early.

Blood pressure above 130/80mmHg is considered to be high and it's detrimental to health when it is between or above 180/120mmHg. This escalated blood pressure results to stroke, cardiac arrest or attack, kidney failure, and even death.

However, daily consumption of tomato juice has been proven by scientists to effectively lower blood pressure and low density lipoprotein cholesterol associated with various heart diseases.

According to a research on 'Unsalted Tomato Juice Intake Improves blood pressure and serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in local Japanese residents at risk of cardiovascular diseases' in Food Science and Nutrition Journal done by Tamami Odai et. 2019; highlighted that hypertensive patients who drank one cup of unsalted tomato juice for 12months observed a significantly lowered blood pressure after the period.

Tomato is a vegetable rich in minerals, vitamins including Vit. C and B, phytochemicals such as flavonoids, polyphenols, carotenoids like lycopene which is an active antioxidant.

A research on the 'Effects of Natural antioxidants from tomato extract in treated but uncontrolled hypertensive patients' in the Cardiovasc Drugs Ther. Journal carried out by Paran E. in 2009, demonstrated that "high lycopene consumption has been associated with decrease in blood pressure".

Lycopene in tomato, lowers bad cholesterol called low density lipoprotein cholesterol which is predominant in obesed people. This cholesterol disturbs the normal pumping of the heart, hence resulting to high blood pressure, various heart diseases, strokes, etc.

As the popular saying goes, health is wealth, you must be healthy to be wealthy. A glass of fresh tomato juice will help enhance good health not only reducing blood pressure but also enriching the body with minerals and vitamins nourishment as well as contributing to weight loss.

All you need to do is to blend some fresh tomatoes with some quantity of water, pour into a glass and drink daily preferable in the morning. You may add very little quantity of sugar if you desire.
