Atherosclerosis: Foods That Can Help Keep Your Arteries Clean

Atherosclerosis is a condition that affects the blood vessels. It is characterized by hardening of the vessels as a result of deposition of fats on it's walls. It often occurs when the blood cholesterol levels are high coupled with presence of adhesion molecules that occurs due to inflammatory reactions.

This condition is among the major causes of most heart diseases. When accumulation is much, the blood supply to a tissue can be blocked entirely. This can lead to necrosis of the tissue supplied and when a heart muscle is involved, myocardial infarction is often the case. Stroke also results from chronic atherosclerosis.

Some foods that can help keep the arteries clean include -

1. Beans

Beans are among the popular foods found here in Nigeria and can be prepared and consumed in several methods.

Beans contain insoluble fibre which helps slowdown the absorption of fats into the bloodstream. This helps keep the blood cholesterol levels in check, reducing the risks of high blood cholesterol levels which could result to atherosclerosis.

2. Fish

Oily fishes are good sources of omega 3 fatty acids. These nutrients are known to help reduce the expression of cellular adhesion molecules.

Cellular adhesion molecules are proteins that would make it possible for cells to stick with one another and with their surroundings.

Reduction in the effects of these proteins would bring reduced chances of fats clogging up to the walls of the arteries or with each other thus, keeping the arteries clean to promote smooth flow of blood.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are also among the common vegetables seen around. They contain carotenoids known as lycopene, a compound known to help reduce inflammation processes as well as bad cholesterols. Reduced effect of inflammation processes helps keep the blood vessels free from cellular adhesion molecules giving less room for fats to clog upon each other and the surrounding walls.
