Edible oils are a crucial component of human diets; they can be categorized as either animal or vegetable oils and contain fatty acids, which are further categorized as either saturated or unsaturated. Both animal and vegetable oils include unsaturated fatty acids, but vegetable oils also contain cholesterol. When compared to vegetable oils, animal oils have a higher risk of causing cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases in people aged 60 and over due to their higher levels of cholesterol and saturated fatty acids.
Is it reasonable to assume that all vegetable oils are safe to consume? Analysis of edible fats and oils leads us to the conclusion that vegetable oils are the healthiest option, especially as we age. Other research has demonstrated that these oils aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as beta-carotene. These oils include a lot of calories, are a wonderful source of energy, and have other health benefits that are important for healthy aging.
1. Olive oil
Supporting a healthy heart and brain and lowering the risk of stroke, heart attack, and cancer, olive oil, and especially extra-virgin olive oil, contain phytochemicals that protect against Alzheimer's diseases, monounsaturated fats that reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, and antioxidants that protect the body from oxidative stress.
2) Walnut oil
According to Healthline, Walnut oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols, both of which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities that can reduce blood pressure, reduce inflammation, improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and even have anticancer effects.
3. Flaxseed oil
Alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that reduces cancer risk and arthritis symptoms, is abundant in flaxseed oil. Furthermore, it contains omega-6 fatty acids, which reduce cardiovascular disease, stroke, and premature mortality.
4) Canola oil
Scientists have found that the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in canola oil help reduce total cholesterol levels, which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other chronic conditions.
5. Sunflower oil
Unsaturated fats in sunflower oil have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while apha-hydroxy acids help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and vitamin E strengthens the immune system.
6. Sesame oil
This is another another polyunsaturated fat that has been shown to have protective effects against cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
7: Avocado oil
The nutritious value of avocado oil is high both at room temperature and when heated. It's high in beneficial monounsaturated fatty acids, which have been linked to lower risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and other neurodegenerative disorders. It may promote eye and skin health because to its high lutein, vitamin A, and vitamin E content.
8. Grapeseed oil
Grapeseed is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, both of which protect against free radicals and fortify the immune system.
Availability in Nigeria, please. Yes. You can get these oils at any major supermarket. When purchasing oil, always read the label to be sure you're buying the appropriate stuff.
