Uterine fibroids are growths in your uterus. Almost 80 percent of American women have or have had fibroids. They’re also called, benign tumours, uterine leiomyomas, and myomas. While fibroids aren’t cancerous or life-threatening, they can sometimes cause health problems such as heavy bleeding, painful periods, abdominal distension, organ obstruction and female infertility. Doctors can recommend some medical treatments for fibroids, but some people may also try dietary methods and herbal medicines to relieve symptoms.
In this article, we explore the evidence behind natural treatments for fibroids, including herbal remedies.
Turmeric; Turmeric is called atale pupa in Yoruba; gangamau in Hausa; it is a spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family, Zingaberaceae. It contains the active ingredient curcumin. Curcumin is a bright yellow chemical produced by some plants. It is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric. (It is sold as an herbal supplement, cosmetics ingredient, food flavouring, and food colouring.
Mushrooms; Today, reishi, maitake and shiitake mushrooms are widely used in natural approaches for breast tumours and uterine fibroids. These medicinal mushrooms possess strong anti-tumour activity. This means they encourage a healthy body environment and fight against the development of abnormal tissue. They support your body’s natural immune response against cancerous tumours and non-cancerous growths like fibroids and cysts.
Green Tea; Green tea contains chemicals called flavanols, which are antioxidants. Antioxidants help to reduce cell damage in the body. A 2013 study looked at the effects of taking green tea extract (epigallocatechin gallate) on 33 females with one or more fibroids. The authors report that those who took green tea extract had less severe fibroids symptoms and that their fibroids became smaller.
