Osun State Women Affairs Commissioner Fights Against Female Genital Mutilation

Osun State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Barrister Bukola Olaboopo has called on mothers, women groups, youths and high-powered government organizations, to step up advocacy towards the total eradication of female genital mutilation in the state.

She made this call in Osogbo, while interacting with journalists on the occasion of the 2020 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Mrs Olaboopo noted that the Osun State Government through the ministry of women Affairs, have been sensitizing women and girls mostly in the rural areas on the dangers of female genital mutilation and in turn has seen a reasonable reduction in cases of female genital mutilation in the state from about 78.8 percent in 2015 to 34 percent in 2019.

She also noted that FGM constitute a form of discrimination against women and girls, violating their rights to health, security and physical integrity. To this end, she called for continuous education and adequate information dissemination on the dangers inherent in the practice; also advocating for sanctions to those who refuse to desist from it.

" FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15 and this causes much bleeding and health issues which include infections, infertility as well as complications and even death in some cases.

'' The rate of FGM in the state has reduced drastically from about 78.8 percent to 34 percent in the last few years. We are doing all we can to totally eradicate any form of FGM in the state and we are working hard to achieve even more.

" The Commisioner maintained that only when mothers begin to raise their voices against the act and government initiates strong legislations, that we could begin to race total eradication to this practice.

" We must speak and make our voices to be heard, we no longer want our women to suffer. We musnt stop propagating the news against FGM. We must join hands together to see to it that we fight this battle till we reach zero level." She concluded.
