4 Lifestyles And Foods To Avoid If You Wake Up More Than 2 Times To Urinate At Night

It can be quite frustrating to go to work all day, get back home and expect to get quality sleep only for your sleep to be disrupted by an incessant need to urinate during the night. This, unfortunately, is the story of many people whose sleep often get disrupted by the need to urinate, and in many cases, such people often find it difficult to go back to sleep.

Anyone who has to wake up more than two times to urinate at night is said to suffer from a condition called nocturnal polyuria which is a term for describing excessive urination at night. Besides being capable of affecting the quality of your sleep, nocturia can also be a symptom of an underlying medical issue that may need to be addressed before the condition becomes a thing of the past.

Some of the possible medical issues that can cause nocturia include infection and/or enlargement of the prostate, bladder prolapse, overactive bladder, kidney infection, tumours of the bladder, prostate, or pelvic area, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. Apart from the medical conditions mentioned above, excessive urination can also be caused by certain lifestyle choices.

The lifestyle choices you should watch to avoid the need to wake up frequently to urinate at night include the following:

1. Excessive fluid intake, especially a few moments to bed.

2. The consumption of diuretics such as alcohol and caffeinated beverages at night.

3. Excessive consumption of alcohol can also cause nighttime waking and the urge to urinate.

4. Some people have also developed a habit of waking up at night to urinate, so such people should try to unlearn that habit.

Apart from alcohol and caffeinated beverages, certain foods are also known to contribute to excessive urination especially when such foods are consumed at night or close to bedtime. Such foods are generally called bladder irritant foods few examples of such foods are highlighted below:

1. Acidic fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes

3. Tomato-based products

4. Carbonated drinks
