Unhealthy Ways Stress Affects Your Body

Stress is a natural phenomenon. It is a feeling we all go through in life when we are challenged or overwhelmed but more than just an emotion, it is a hard-wired physical response that travels throughout your entire body. When activated too often or too long your primitive fight or flight stress response not only changes your brain but can also damage many of the other organs and cells throughout your body.

Below are the 2 ways stress affects your body

Hypertension- The adrenal gland releases the stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine also known as adrenaline, and norepinephrine, these hormones travel through your bloodstream and easily reach your blood vessels and heart. Adrenaline causes your heart to beat fast and raises your blood pressure over time causing hypertension. Cortisol can result in making sure that the inner lining of blood vessels does not function normally. The result of all these changes in your body may increase your chances of a heart attack or stroke.

Heartburn- when your brain senses stress, it activates your autonomic nervous system through the system of nerve connections, your big brain communicates stress to your intestinal nervous system. This brain-gut connection can disturb the natural rhythmic contractions that move food throughout your gut leading to irritable bowel syndrome and can increase your gut sensitivity to acid making you more likely to feel heartburn.
