3 Causes Of Bent Back At Old Age And How To Prevent It

Bent back is one of the common medical abnormalities that is usually noticed in older adults(especially those in their 60s above). Medically, it is referred to as kyphosis, an abnormal rounding of the upper back or excessive spinal curve that may lead to excessive pressure on the spine, causing pain.

In many cases, kyphosis may occur without showing other symptoms than hunchback (a protruding upper back). But in fortunate cases, signs like stiffness in the upper back, back pain, and a rounded back may be noticed in mild kyphosis.

According to scientific research, kyphosis occurs when the upper part of the back (thoracic region) becomes wedge-shaped. It is often caused by the following reasons.

This is the major cause of bent back. People whole indulge in poor posture for too long such as sitting for too long, carrying heavy bags, slouching, and leaning back in a chair can stretch the muscles and ligaments that support the vertebrae out of their normal position and lead to kyphosis overtime.

Hence, children and young adults should be cautioned from poor postures and encouraged to stretch and exercise from time to time, especially when sitting for too long to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles and prevent kyphosis at old age.

2. Arthritis/bone deterioration diseases

Arthritis can cause inflammation of the spinal joints which may lead to spinal instability and eventually cause kyphosis. On the other hand, bone deterioration diseases such as fracture, osteoporosis, sclerosis, and bone cancer can collapse the bone in the front of the spine and lead to wedge-shaped vertebrae (kyphosis).

However, consumption of natural sources of anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, and calcium supplements such as fatty fish, milk, dairy products, dark-green leafy vegetables, watermelon, tomatoes, olive oil, and nuts can help prevent kyphosis.

3. Weakened back muscles

Weakened back muscles either due to lack of physical activities, poor nutrition, unhealthy aging, or inflammation may eventually cause kyphosis if left untreated or unattended for a long period.

Therefore, to strengthen back muscles, regular exercise such as dumbbell roll, lat pulldown, and barbell deadlift can help strengthen your back muscles. Also, reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks as they may cause and make kyphosis worsen.

Other conditions such as birth defects (spina bifida), polio, connective tissues infections, muscular dystrophy, tumor, and infection of the spine can also lead to kyphosis. Therefore, if you notice persistent back pain, breathing difficulties, numbness in the arms and legs, or bladder control, quickly see a doctor.

Note: Kyphosis can occur in both children and adults. So, endeavor to caution your children of any poor posture.
