Types of Asthma and how you can treat them

Asthma is a medical condition that causes breathing difficulties that happen as a result of airway narrowing, swelling, and excessive mucus production.

An asthma attack is a treatable condition, but it may be severe. During an asthma attack, the muscles around the airways may constrict, making it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. An asthma attack ensues when the symptoms become severe. Some symptoms include; chest tightness, breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, dizziness, weakness. There are three common types of asthma are:

1. Nocturnal asthma:

This is a very common type of asthma. Symptoms of this type of asthma are more prominent at night. In cases like this, the patient may wake up coughing or with chest pains. Studies show that most asthma-related deaths occur at night. These deaths may be caused by a lot of things ranging from exposure to allergens (asthma triggers) to cooling of the airways, or even hormone cycles at night. Occasionally, normal heartburn can trigger asthma symptoms at night.

2. Exercise-induced asthma or exercise-induced bronchoconstriction:

This type of asthma occurs as a result of the physical exertion of patients during an exercise. Wheezing and coughing are the most prevalent symptoms of exercise-induced asthma. With exercise-induced asthma, airway narrowing is at itspeak5-20 minutes after the exercise begins, which makes it difficult for a person to catch a breath. In most cases like this, an asthma inhaler (bronchodilator) is recommended by a doctor as a form of treatment.

3 . Allergic or seasonal asthma:

Inhaling allergens is the main trigger for inducing allergic asthma. Allergens might include, pet dander dust, mold mites. Sometimes, allergic asthma may occur due to the patients’ occupation. This is why patients must know their exact triggers and consult an allergist or immunologist.

A few drugs like aspirin may cause asthma. Few patients can also develop asthma only during the winter or cold season because cold might be a trigger for them. Anyone who has an allergy due to allergens, season, or occupation may require the intervention of an immunologist or allergist. Doctors usually recommend a preventive inhaler or reliever inhaler for this type of asthma.

Other lesser-known asthma includes:

Occupational asthma:

This type of asthma Is common among hairdressers, carpenters, farmers, and animal breeders who are exposed to allergens at their places of work. In cases like these, medication and counseling may be needed.

Cough variant asthma:

Intense coughing is the main characteristic of this asthma. It may be triggered by exercise or infections.

Treatment:

Although there is no cure for asthma, long-term control and prevention are the most effective methods of stopping. attacks before they even begin. Treatment usually involves identifying and avoiding asthma triggers as much as possible. Some common treatments for asthma include

Inhalers, tablets like leukotriene receptor antagonists, theophylline, steroid tablets, steroid tablets. For some people with severe asthma, injections like Fasenra are administered every few weeks to keep the symptoms under control. Sometimes, a surgical procedure called bronchial thermoplasty may be required as a treatment for severe asthma.
