Vaginal Odour: Causes And How to Deal With It

Vaginal odor is any odor that comes from the vagina. It's normal for your vagina to have a slight odor. A strong vaginal odor is a fishy smell, might be abnormal and could indicate a problem. Abnormal vaginal odor that happens because of an infection or another problem usually comes with other vaginal signs and symptoms such as itching, burning, irritation or discharge.

Vaginal odor can vary throughout your menstrual cycle. You might notice a stronger odor especially right after having sex.

Normal sweating also can cause you to smell a bit different down there.

Do not be tempted to douche or use a vaginal deodorant to decrease vaginal odor. These products actually increase irritation and other vaginal symptoms

Every vagina has its own unique scent , which is a combination of the normal bacteria that live in there, your diet, if you wear natural fabrics or synthetics, your level of hygiene, your bathroom habits, and what your glands secrete. You should know what you smell like down there.

Note :

Bacterial vaginosis :

This is an overgrowth of bacteria that normally live in your vagina . It is the most common vaginal infection that causes vaginal odor.

Trichomoniasis :

This is a sexually transmitted infection which can also lead to vaginal odor.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea infections usually don't cause vaginal odors ( they can lead to fertility problems if left untreated) . Neither do yeast infections (Candida) .

Usually if you have vaginal odor without other vaginal symptoms, it's unlikely that your vaginal odor is abnormal.

Common causes of abnormal vaginal odor include:

Bacterial vaginosis

Poor hygiene

Forgotten tampon In the vagina. If left in place for several days, it can cause toxic shock syndrome. You can die as a result of this.

Trichomoniasis

Rectovaginal fistula (an abnormal opening between the rectum and vagina that allows feces to leak into the vagina)

Cervical cancer

Vaginal cancer

How to deal with it
