I'm sure we all are a little bit familiar with zobo, I can remember I took alot of it during my Polytechnic days, and it was so refreshing.
Zobo is one of the most consumed beverages in the world, ranging from Africa to Asia, Europe, American etc. It is served in various homes and restaurants. I also discovered it has various names in some places, it's known as 'Roselle'.
In Nigeria here we call it zobo drink, it is Ruby red in colour and has a sour taste. Therefore, it is also known as a sour tea and has a flavour similar to cranberry, and it contains alot of vitamins c and minerals too. It is also used as a medical tea as well.
You may think zobo is just a drink for quenching thirst and feeling the belly but it's more than that. Let's check out the health benefits of hibiscus tea.
Benefits of hibiscus tea (zobo) includes:
1) Manages blood pressure.
Consuming zobo lowers the blood pressure in pre-hypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults. A study conducted by ODIGIE IP suggests that it has anti- hypertensive and cardioprotective properties, which can be beneficial for people suffering from hypertension and those at high risks of cardiovascular diseases.
2) lowers cholesterol.
It helps to lower the levels of (bad) LDL cholesterol from the body, thereby helping to protect against heart diseases and protecting blood vessels from damage. The hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic properties of hibiscus tea can be beneficial for those who suffer from blood sugar disorders like diabetes.
3) Protects liver.
Research studies have also suggested that the antioxidant properties of hibiscus tea also helps in treating liver diseases. Antioxidants help protect your body from diseases because they neutralize the free radicals present in the body tissues and cells. Hibiscus tea could increase your life span by maintaining good overall health.
4) Contains Anti-cancer properties.
Hibiscus tea contains hibiscus protocatechuic acid which has anti- tumour and antioxidant properties. Hibiscus slows down the growth of cancerous cells by inducing apoptosis, commonly known as programmed cell death.
5) Anti- inflammatory & Antibacterial Agents.
it is rich in ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin c, an essential nutrient required by your body to boost and stimulate the activity of the immune system. It is also used to treat discomfort caused by fever, due to its cooling effect.
6) Relieves menstrual pain.
The health benefits of hibiscus tea include relief from cramps and menstrual pain. It helps in restoring hormonal balance as well, which can reduce the sysmtoms of menstruation like mood swings, depression, and over heating.
7) Antidepressants Agent.
zobo drink contains vitamins and minerals like flavonoids which have Antidepressants properties. Consumption of hibiscus tea can help calm down the nervous system, and it may reduce anxiety and depression by creating a relaxed sensation in the mind and body.
8) Treat constipation problem.
As earlier stated, the zobo drink is packed with several formidable nutrients, and one of the nutrients is, it's very rich in fibre. The high level of fibre found in zobo makes it a healthy drink for combating constipation problem as fibre is scientifically proven to be a great digestive system booster. It will not only treat constipation but also boost your digestion system as well.
9) Promote weight loss.
Zobo drink helps in lowering the absorption of the major dietary components (starch and glucose) which are often linked with excess weight gain. When those components become lowered, it will then accelerate weight loss process.
Additionally, zobo drink hinders the production of amylase, which is very helpful in absorbing carbohydrates and attach in the body. This means that drinking Zobo regularly can help lessen the absorption from surfacing any longer.
Zobo drink and pregnancy.
Many people have asked: is zobo drink good for pregnant women? The answer is NO!
A research carried out by Dr Iyare, E.E and Iyare, F.E in 2006 was carried out to determine the effects of maternal consumption of aqueous extract of hibiscus sabdariffa during pregnancy, on pregnancy weight gain and postpartum weigh loss.
Of course, zobo is a healthy drink, but pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid consuming zobo due to its detrimental effects on maternal and child health.
Let's have your comments if you've tasted Zobo drink before, tells us how you feel about zobo drink.
