If you are from the Eastern part of Nigeria, you will know uziza leaves; some other tribes know it too and have adopted it. Its botanical name is Piper Guineense.
Uziza is mostly used to prepare pepper soup for women who just gave birth. This is because it is widely believed that eating pepper soup prepared with uziza leaves helps to shrink the uterus/womb back to its normal size after pregnancy. This practice has not been medically proven, but it has been passed down from generation to generation in Igbo land and the people believe in it.
You see, uziza leaves are very medically potent and contain lots of medicinal properties. Though not much research has been carried out about the nutritional benefits of uziza, the little that has been done points out the important medicinal benefits inherent in it.
The most active ingredient in uziza leaves are known as piperine which gives it that peppery and pungent taste it has, it is also what gives it the medicinal properties it has.
Some of the health benefits it offers are:
1. It helps to relieve cold and cough. According to a medical publication by Mgbeahurike .E (2019), 'Evaluation of the Medicinal Uses and Antimicrobial Activity of Piper Guineense (Research gate DOI), uziza leaves are effective in helping to treat cold and cough.
All you need to do is to boil some leaves in water, sieve and drink the uziza water. Do this twice a day for maximum effect.
2. It helps to lower blood sugar. Just like scent leaf that helps to lower blood sugar in diabetic and pre-diabetic patients, uziza leaves also help to lower blood sugar in diabetic patients.
All you need to do is to add it to your soup regularly and you would notice significant result in a short time.
