Menstruation is a woman's monthly bleeding often called your "period". When you menstruate, your body discards the monthly build up of the lining of your uterus (womb).
When on your period, there are a number of activities that you should never do. This is because they can harm your health, and you'll end up feeling worse.
Everyone has a different body, some people may be more sensitive to these things than others. My advice however is that it is best to avoid these things altogether.
Here are 8 things you should never do during your period:
1. Don't Use Cleansers With Artificial Fragrance
A lot of women get worried about the odour that the vagina produce during periods. As a result, they use artificially scented soaps, powders, wipes, gels, and other products full of chemicals.
These chemicals can cause vagina irritation, and should be avoided. If you have a strong vagina odour, it is best to see your gynaecologist in case there is an infection that can be treated.
2. Don't Take Too Much Salt
Many women report that eating salty foods during their period increase cramps (menstrual pain), fluid retention, and bloating.
You do not want to look bloated during your periods, or make your menstrual pain worse. It is best to avoid foods with too much salt when seeing your period.
However, if you are presently seeing your period, and you've already taken too much salt, I'll advice you drink plenty of water. This will flush out the excess salt, and your body will return to its normal state.
3. Don't Have Unprotected Sex
Normally, it is not really a good idea to have unprotected sex. This is however heightened when seeing your period.
This is because you have an increased risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease during menstruation.
Blood is a good medium for viruses, and other bugs. Therefore, the transmission of STDs like HIV can be higher during this time period.
Another thing is that, the cervix is slightly open (dilated) during your period, so it becomes easy for viruses to enter into your pelvis from the vagina.
4. Do not Eat A Lot Of Dairy
Dairy products like cheese, milk-based products; can cause cramps to worsen.
They can lead to bloating, gas and diarrhoea, so it is best to avoid them when seeing your period.
5. Do Not Wear A Pad or Tampon For Too Long
It is recommended that you change your tampon/pad every 3 to 4 hours to avoid bacterial build up.
Bacterial build up can lead to unpleasant odour, and infections [toxic shock syndrome].
Toxic shock syndrome is a rare life threatening condition caused by the release of toxins from an overgrowth of a bacteria called "Staphylococcus" (staph). This bacteria is found in the bodies of women.
6. Do Not Wait To Take Pain Relievers
If you normally feel cramps during your periods, it is advised to to take pain relievers before your period starts (one day before), or immediately it starts.
Waiting to take pain relievers when you're already down with cramps will make it less effective. It is usually more effective when you take it before.
Please do not take before your period if your cycle is irregular. In this case, take it immediately you notice bleeding.
7. Do Not Get A Breast Examination
While monthly breast exams are a good idea, don't take breast examinations during your period.
This is because, there are fluctuations in estrogen & progesterone levels that can make it uncomfortable. Also, breast changes occur during menstruation.
8. Do Not Skip Your Workouts
A lot of women are guilty of this. They tend to abandon their workout routines when seeing their periods. Well, it is advised to continue with your regular workout as it can help you feel better.
It can also help to relieve headaches, fatigue, and even anxiety. It sure helps with menstrual cramps too.
