Covid-19: first case of Delta variant recorded in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed an index case of the Delta variant of Coronavirus In Nigeria. In a statement released by the body, the deadly variant was detected during routine tests required of all international travelers and genomic sequencing at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory, Abuja.

The WHO tagged it as a “variant of concern” that has been confirmed in over 90 countries and expected to spread to more countries, after it was first detected last year in India. Symptoms reported were; headache, sore throat and runny nose, without the some of the significant covid-19 signs such as loss of taste and smell.

According to NCDC, there is evidence that the variant The variant, also known as B. 1. 617 has a higher level of transmissivity compared to others, thereby advising the populace to take responsibility by observing safety measures. However, studies are said to be ongoing to check the therapeutics effect of vaccine on it.
