Why must Doctors leave Nigeria when they are not even enough?

As stakeholders decry brain drain in the health sector, many doctors are leaving this country because of poor working conditions and harsh economic environment among other reasons.

Presently, we do not have enough doctors yet, many are resigning, some are not practising and some have died.

Remembering some month ago when the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, declared that doctors who want to relocate to other countries in search of greener pastures are free to do so, claiming that Nigeria has enough medical personnel to cater for the population.

As at today, more Nigerian medical practitioners may leave the country as the United Kingdom announced new ‘Health and Care Visa’ policy to attract the best talents in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

The new visa policy aims to make it cheaper, quicker and easier for healthcare professionals to come go to UK, beginning from August.

We implore the government to have a refocus on quality of healthcare services in Nigeria, value of life of the Nigerian and health insurance for all Nigerians to ensure a functional and sustainable healthcare financing across the country.
