The Dangers Of Being Overweight

Becoming overweight or obesity was sometime perceived as sign of being wealthy, but scientists have revealed that it is linked to many health risks.

It is riskier if your weight is centered around the stomach ( the apple shape) ,

than when it is centered around the buttocks or hips. ( pear shape) .


If your weight gives you this kind of shape,it is not dangerous. According to WebMD , a person is deemed overnight if his body mass index ( BMI) is above 30.

Obesity may increase a person's risk of suffering the following conditions especially if he has a family history of having àny of these conditions: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, stroke, osteoarthritis, gout, some cancers etc.

Here are health risks that are linked to being overweight.

1. Type 2 Diabetes

According to scientists, being overweight increases a person's risk of type 2 diabetes. Current research have strongly linked obesity to an increased risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Scientists believe that the major cause of type 2 diabetes is accumulation of too much fats in the belly and liver which may affect the work of the liver and pancreas.

2. Increases your risk of heart diseases and stroke.

Scientists believe that being overweight increases a person's risk of getting heart diseases and stroke, visceral fats that is fats at the abdomen is very dangerous to health.

It affects the performance of major organs like liver and pancreas. Too much triglycerides ( unused calories) in the blood which is common with overweight people is one of the causes of cardiovascular diseases.

3. High Blood Pressure.

Obesity increases a person's chance of getting high blood pressure. People who are overweight tend to have more cholesterol and triglycerides levels in the blood which in turn leads to increased blood pressure.

4. May cause osteoarthritis.

People who are overweight have a higher chance of suffering from osteoarthritis.

5. Increased risk of suffering from some cancers.

According to WebM, studies have linked risk of these cancers to obesity: breast cancer, colon, endometrium, kidney oesophagus prostrate cancer etc.

6. Gallbladder disease and gallstones.

Gallbladder disease and gallstones are more common to people who are overweight. Ironically rapid weight loss may also cause gallstones. If you want to reduce weight,work with your doctor to ensure that you do it the safest way.

7. May cause sleep apnea.

Breathing problems such as sleep apnea is common with people who are overweight. Sleep apnea may lead to heart problems.

8. Gout.

Gout is a disease that affects the joints. It is caused by excess uric acid in the blood. Gout is common with overweight people.
