Ramadan 2021: The Spiritual Merits Of Fasting

Fasting is primarily an exercise of devotion to willingly renounce oneself, for a definite period of time, from all bodily appetites in order to form spiritual discipline and self-control. Muslims are prohibited from eating or drinking from dawn (fajr) to dusk (maghrib) when the adhan is sounded.

During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims are obligated to fast, every day from dawn to sunset. Fasting requires the abstinence from food and drink. Fasting the month of Ramadān was made obligatory during the month of Sha‘bān, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Makkah to Madīnah.

physical benefit of fasting:

A few of the benefits to fasting include: Weight loss — due to the increased use of body fat for fuel. Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes prevention and/or treatment — due to reduced insulin secretion. Enhanced thinking, mood & metabolism — due to increased norepinephrine and growth hormone secretion.

Spiritual fasting is to deny your body it's physical needs (usually food) so that moves your focus from the physical to the spiritual (faith). It helps you to grow closer to God and is often a regular part of prayer life.
