It is common knowledge that nighttime is when a persistent cough is at its worst. Nonetheless, if a cough is keeping you from falling asleep, you can take some steps to alleviate the problem.
If a cough is keeping you up at night, WebMD suggests trying these measures.
1. Change your lying posture
The best method to get some rest is to sit up straight and stop coughing. Some people find it completely adequate to sleep on a couch or in a chair with only a couple of pillows. Try it out for a few of nights; it could work.
2. The second is to relax with a cup of tea.
To soothe your cough, try drinking something warm. If you're suffering from a sore throat or a stuffy nose, try drinking hot tea with lemon juice and honey. But because of their stimulating effects, caffeinated drinks should be avoided.
3. Prevent air from passing through your face
You should rethink your sleeping arrangements if any form of forced air ventilation (heat, AC, or ceiling fan) is likely to disturb your face while you're in bed.
4. Put in a humidifier.
Some people get relief from coughing by using humidifiers to provide moisture to the air. If there is no hot steam involved, then you can use a cool-air humidifier for the job. In order to prevent mould growth, the humidifier must be kept clean and dry at all times.
5. Take a lozenge.
Numbing agents like benzocaine can temporarily relieve a cough, allowing you to have a decent night's sleep.
