9 Things That Could Cause Your Body To Itch At Night And Foods You Should Avoid Eating Close To Bedtime

Nighttime for many people, is a time to relax, sleep and get quality rest from the struggles and stress they've gone through during the day as they try to find their daily bread. However, many things often serve as impediments, preventing people from getting their well-deserved sleep. One of them is known as nocturnal pruritus or simply called itchy skin at night, which happens when someone feels itches on the body, thus needing to scratch the body repeatedly.

In some cases, itchy skin at night can be severe enough to disturb sleep regularly and it can be caused by natural causes. In some cases, however, itchy skin at night could be indicative of serious health problems. But be that as it may, two of the natural causes of the condition are stated below:

1. It could be as a result of the body's natural circadian rhythms which would see body temperature and blood flow to the skin increased at night, warming the skin and causing itchiness.

2. At night, the body also releases more cytokines, a hormone that increases inflammation, thus making you feel itchy.

As stated earlier, nocturnal pruritus, in some cases can be indicative of serious health conditions. A few of the health-related causes include:

1. Skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and hives

2. Kidney or liver disease

3. Iron deficiency anaemia

4. Thyroid problems

5. Psychological conditions such as stress, depression, and schizophrenia

6. Cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma

7. Nerve disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, shingles, and diabetes.

Itchy skin at night can be treated using prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as imbibing some lifestyle changes. In addition to treating the condition, it may require the avoidance of certain foods close to bedtime, as such foods can induce warmth, which would, in turn, cause your body to hitch. A few examples of such foods are highlighted below:

1. Spicy Foods

2. Caffeine

3. Alcohol

4. Tea
