1. Sugar-Free or No-Added-Sugar Foods
Most people think that sugar-free and no-sugar-added food items will not impact their blood sugar. This isn't most times the case.
Sugar-free and no-sugar-added foods can still have carbohydrate content, particularly if they contain milk or flour. Ensure to always go through the labels and take these foods in moderate amounts.
2. White Bread, Rice, and Pasta
Refined carbohydrates, like white bread, white pasta, and white rice, are starches that have gone through processing to eliminate the bran and germ of the grain. This removes fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from them.
These foods can lead to big blood sugar spikes yet give little to no nutritional value.
Rather than going for refined grains, it is better to choose whole grains. Research has indicated that going for whole grains rather than refined grains can lower the odds of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and aid in the loss of weight.
The fibre contained in whole grains slows down the speed at which blood sugars increase. Whole grains also have more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
3. Battered and Fried Foods
Fried food items like chicken nuggets, eggplant Parmesan, and chicken wings are breaded or dipped in flour before cooking. Flour and breading are starches and have added carbohydrates.
For instance, a 3-ounce breaded chicken cutlet contains about 10 grams of carbohydrates.
You can consume them from time to time, but take note of the carbohydrate content of those foods and try to keep your portions manageable.
Also keep in mind that these kinds of foods are rich in calories and saturated fat, which can make you gain weight and increase your level of cholesterol.
