Physicians like Hippocrates and Galen said that the human body contains four substances named, yellow bile, black bile, phlegm and blood. They said that these four substances needed to be balanced, for good health. According to there theory, when someone gets sick, it means that the person has excess blood. The doctor would cut out the person's vein, and remove some fluid from the body. At times, they might use leeches to suck out the blood. Some people might die of blood loss, as a result of the treatment.

This was one of the worst ways of performing surgery on people. Trepanation involves boring a hole into people's skull, to cure illness. According to history, some people survived the surgery while some did not.
Mercury contains poisonous properties that is harmful to the health. In history, it was once used as an elixir and medicine. According to history, the Chinese alchemists claimed that liquid mercury can help to increase lifespan. One of the most famous issue that happened was Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who supposedly died after taking mercury pills, which was created to make him immortal.
