Drugs are known to be medically-researched product that helps to prevent or cure a particular illness or the other. However, due to the finances or labor efforts put into the production of some drugs, their price appear to more expensive than the others.
For the sake of this article however, effort has been made to research what and how much the most expensive drug cost.
Firstly, the name of the world’s most expensive drug is Zolgensma. Zolgensma is a one-time prescription gene therapy used to treat children less than two (2) years old with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a progressive, rare genetic disease that is caused by the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene that is missing or not working properly. Inshort, the illness destroys the nerves that controls the muscles. A child diagnosed with this illness don’t usually live above two (2) years old. Zolgensma is a one-time infusion into the vein of the patient.
The drug however needs to be prescribed strictly by a competent doctor. This is because Zolgensma can cause acute serious liver injury in children who receive Zolgensma hence, it is advisable you see your doctor for prescription.
Statistics has it that SMA affects about 1 in every 11,000 babies born each year.
Now, the price of this particular drug will startle you. It cost no less than $2.1 million per patient. Obviously, with this amount, you’ll comfortably buy a Rolls Royce or even a Bugatti.
However, it is not in anyone’s wish to be in a situation where they’ll need to buy this drug. I pray we do not find a reason to.
