Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke is breathed in, and absorbed into the bloodstream . Most commonly, the substance used is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant, which have been rolled into a small square of rice paper to create a small, round cylinder called a "cigarette".

Chemicals in tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, 70 of which are known to cause cancer and increase the chance of heart problems, cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis, which is when plaque builds up in the blood and sticks to the artery walls. This makes them narrower, reducing blood flow and increasing the risk of blood clots.

Smoking also damages the blood vessels, making them thicker and narrower. This makes it harder for blood to flow, and also increases blood pressure, heart rate and coronary heart disease which is one of the causes of death.On average, the life expectancy of a smoker is 10 years less than a nonsmoker.

Giving up smoking is difficult for many people, but you most always remember that smokers are liable to die young.
