Night Study: 9 Things To Do To Keep You Awake.

Staying awake while studying can be challenging, especially at the end of a long day. There are however ways to help improve your wakefulness and avoid nodding off in the middle of a study session.

1. Bright Lighting: studying with a low or dim light can promote sleepiness. Bright lights help a person feel more awake. Study in a well- lighted environment and avoid the use of uncharged or unpowered lamps and torches.

2. Regular exercise: engaging in physical activities during the day can help a person stay active at night. Take some time to move around or even do a short exercise routine to get the body’s energy levels back up.

3. Caffeine: this has proven really effective in the general population. This should however be taken in minimum. Safer choices for moderate caffeine consumption include coffee , tea, and sodas.

4. Healthy diet: Foods high on fat can make you sleepy. Take balanced and healthy diet rich in nutrients and fibre such as soups and a lot of fruits and vegetables. Protein diets can also help boost your energy level and keep you awake. Sugary snacks and junks can make your blood sugar spike and then crash, leaving you feeling sluggish and sleepy.

5. Sleep well: getting adequate sleep during the day will help keep you awake for night study. For those who stay up late till evening at work or classes, getting enough, well-scheduled rest and sleep will help reserve the energy for a night study.

6. Drink enough water: dehydration has been shown to drain energy and disrupt cognitive functions, making studying difficult. To tackle this, it is recommended to take at least 2 litres of water per day.

7. Avoid long stretch of reading: while some people can sit for hours studying, the optimal time to study and maintain concentration is 2 hours. Taking breaks of 10-15 minutes during study will help keep the brain active and avoid sudden drain of energy from the body which can make you feel asleep.

8. Active reading: while everyone has their methods of reading and understanding, doing more of writing and reading out aloud will keep you engaged rather than reading in your mind.

9. Avoid the comfort zone: sitting upright may help you stay focused and alert. Standing and moving around from time to time may help boost your blood circulation which in turn, prevent you from getting sleepy. Avoid places or spots you associate with sleep which can make you feel drowsy.

In summary, while all of the above tips can be helpful to keep you awake for a night study, consistency is the key. Maintain whichever of the tips work for you to enable the body system "reset" itself and adapt.

Remember also that even though our works and study may demand so much from us, we should not neglect the importance of adequate rest and sleep.
