Benefits Of Neem Plants To The Human Body

The Neem Plant popularly known as Dogonyaro is a plant whose usefulness accross the world cannot be overemphasized. The Plant also called Azadirachta Indica or Indian Lilac is a tree in the mahogany family known as Meliaceae. It is grown in tropical region such as India and Myanmar.

The Neem Plant (dogonyaro) is a medicinal plant in that every part of it is useful and has medicinal properties.  Apart from being useful to the human body, the Neem plant also has insecticidal and pesticidal properties.

Nigeria is the world’s second largest Neem producer behind India but you can be guaranteed we are not taking advantage of the crop as they are. India has a thriving pharmaceutical industry centred around the crop generating millions in foreign exchange earnings.

In Nigeria, Neem is widely used to treat malaria but we do not have globally branded neem-based anti-malaria packaged drugs like Paracetamol.

Neem leaf is also used for management of leprosy, eye disorders, bloody nose, intestinal worms, diarrhea, loss of appetite, skin ulcers, diseases of the heart and blood vessels, fever, diabetes, gum diseases and liver problems. Neem oil is widely used for different medicinal purposes too. It is a very popular essential oil used to treat all sorts of ailments. Neem is also widely used as an organic pesticide.

The Nigerian Govt. can set aside say 100 square kilometres of land to be used to cultivate the world’s largest Neem plantation, then woo Foreign and Indigenous pharmaceutical companies to come and open processing plants. We can then talk of branded neem oil, neem soap, neem tablets, neem mineral water, neem meal, neem lotion, neem spray, neem herbicide, etc.

Nigeria needs initiatives like this to engage the over 13m out-of-school kids and about 80m Nigerians living below the poverty line. This would go a long way to discourage banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and religious extremism, etc.
