5 Reasons You Wake Up With Scratches.

According to MedicalNewsToday, possible reasons people wake up with scratches are;

1. Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is a kind of parasomnia that makes a person walk and move around as though they are awake, however, they remain in a sleep state.

An individual can experience injuries of unknown cause, including scratches, as a result of their sleepwalking.

2. Skin conditions

The body has a circadian rhythm by which it utilizes natural changes during the day to signal when an individual should feel either awake and alert or sleepy.

The skin has its circadian rhythm, also. Specifically, the skin barrier may experience a greater incidence of water loss during the night, when the body may also secrete less of a hormone known as cortisol. These factors can make a person’s skin itch more at night.

Skin conditions that may lead to scratching while sleeping is atopic dermatitis, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and scabies.

3. Pregnancy

A growing stomach during pregnancy can cause the development of stretch marks, which can be very itchy. The application of anti-itch moisturizers can help regulate the itching during the day, but women cannot do this while sleeping.

As a result, a pregnant woman may wake up with scratches on or around the skin affected by stretch marks.

4. Insect bites

If an insect bites a person while they are asleep, it might begin to scratch the area at night. Bed bugs are a kind of insect that can bite at night. An individual can examine their mattress and bedcovers for these insects should they wake up with bites.

Mosquitoes and spiders can also lead to itchy bites that may aggravate at night. Applying topical anti-itch creams before bed may be beneficial.

5. Allergic reactions

An individual may scratch while they sleep as a result of an allergic response to medications that they take in the evening. Itching can also happen if the detergent that the person used to launder the sheets or blankets irritates their skin.
