Roles of Pharmacist in tackling the deadly corona virus in Nigeria

Pharmacist are professionals that are responsible for drug production, administration, drug monitoring and dispensing activities.

A pharmacist is also involved in critical drug therapy problem as a critical stakeholder. They are responsible for the control drug -drug interactions and drug- food interactions they also are responsible for therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacovigilance and pharmaceutical care practices.

Given the recent upsurge in the number of detected corona virus cases in Lagos Nigeria, it is therefore imperative that Pharmacist bring in their A game to the table in the following ways.

Firstly Director general of NAFDAC Prof. Adeyeye recently called on certain pharmaceutical companies to produce certain batches of chloroquine tablets for clinical trials in the country. With Pharmacist involved in the research and development of drugs to tackle the virus it therefore goes forth to show that the future or Nigeria finding a drug for the management of the virus lies greatly In hands of Pharmacist.

Seconly with the recent uproar raised all around the world and especially in Nigeria about the use of chloroquine to treat the corona virus the responsibility now rest on the shoulders of Pharmacist as drug experts based on their in depth knowledge of the chemistry, and pharmacology of chloroquine to educate and stop the people from purchasing and consuming the drug.

Lastly Pharmacist who are involved in community pharmacy practice have been researched and known to be the first and closest health provider to the common masses, thus their input in educating the people adequately about the corona virus and ways to prevent and identify symptoms cannot be overemphasized.
