3 Major Food Nutrients That You Must Watch Out For To Prevent Kidney Damage

Chronic kidney disease refers to a gradual loss of the ability of the kidney to perform its role of filtration and removal of waste products and excess fluid from the body through the urine. It is a highly precarious health issue that could cause a dangerous buildup of fluid, electrolytes and wastes in the body, leading to what is known as renal failure, a situation whereby the kidneys become damaged and unable to function.

Chronic kidney disease, in its early stage often present few warning signs or symptoms, but as it advances, the symptoms would become pronounced as kidney damage would start progressing slowly. This can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue or weakness, swelling of feet and ankles, loss of appetite, hypertension that is difficult to control, increased or decreased urination, shortness of breath especially when fluids built up in the lungs, and dry, itchy skin.

While chronic kidney failure can be caused by a number of things, one of its risk factors is the intake of certain diets. More specifically, the intake of three particular major nutrients is known to contribute to kidney failure in humans. It is advisable to watch out for the three nutrients and consume foods that are concentrated with them in moderation. The three nutrients are examined below alongside the major foods where they are highly concentrated:

1. Sodium

Sodium is a constituent of many foods around us and is a major component of table salt that we use to add flavour and sweetness to our foods. However, a damaged kidney would be unable to filter out the excess sodium in the blood, which could cause its blood levels to rise.

It is advisable to limit your intake of table salt, and consume foods high in sodium in moderation. Such foods include pizza, sandwiches, canned meat, biscuits, sausage, and bacon.

2. Potassium

Potassium is one of the highly required nutrients by the body, seeing as it plays many critical roles in the body, including reduction of blood pressure and improved nerve functions. However, those with signs of kidney disease must limit their intake to avoid it rising to a dangerous level in the blood.

Foods that are particularly high in potassium that should be consumed in moderation especially by those with kidney disease include dried fruits, beans, bananas, potatoes, avocado, tomatoes, and chicken.

3. Phosphorus

While phosphorus is also needed by the body, its high levels can cause damages to the body including joint pain, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. Damaged kidneys, however, cannot remove excess phosphorus, thus their intake must be limited.

Phosphorus-rich foods that should be consumed in moderation by those with kidney disease include chicken, turkey, dairy products, pork, organ meats, beans, soy, etc.
