Pregnancy period

See the causes of twins, how they are formed and their types.

In recent years, fertility treatments are the fact that made women having multiple births and common. For example in UK, In the year 2016, around 12,000 sets of twins and about 190 sets of triplets or more were born in the UK. That means about 1 in every 65 births in the UK today are twins, triplets or more. Twins are offsprings or children produced from a pregnancy (single pregnancy). Twins can either be identical or non identical.

Formation of twins

The existence or formation of twins comes from the early fertilization of egg in the female uterus, where by after the unfertilized egg has been fertilized, the fertilized egg(zygote) split into two to form two embryos or two zygotes, the twins can also be formed when two unfertilized eggs was fertilized by two sperm cell.

Types of twins

There are two types of twins which are identical and non identical twins.

Identical Twins

Identical twins are monozygote, meaning that they develop from one zygote (a fertilized egg) which splits and forms two embryo. Identical twins may share a placenta or have different Placenta.

causes of monozygote (identical twins)

Regarding spontaneous or natural monozygotic twinning, a recent theory proposes that monozygotic twins are probably formed when a blastocyst contains two inner cell masses (ICM), each of which will lead to a separate fetus, rather than by the embryo splitting while hatching from the zona pellucida (the gelatinous protective coating around the blastocyst).

Monozygotic twins may also be created artificially by embryo splitting. It can be used as an expansion of in vitro fertilization (IVF) to increase the number of available embryos for embryo transfer.

Monozygotic twins are genetically nearly identical and they are always the same sex unless there has been a mutation during development.

non identical twins

Non identical twins are also known as fraternal twins, dissimilar twins, biovular twins and informally in the case of females, sororal twins.

Non identical twins usually occur when two fertilized eggs (zygote) are implanted in the uterus wall at the same time. When two eggs are independently fertilized by two different sperm cells, fraternal twins result. Non identical twins can also be refers to as ordinary siblings who happen to be born at the same time, since they arise from two separate eggs fertilized by two separate sperm, just like ordinary siblings.

Causes of non identical twins

In this aspect of dizygote, the effect of having two zygote is from the mother, releasing two eggs. Mothers over 35 years are likely to born non identical twins, with the advent of technologies and techniques to assist women in getting pregnant, the rate of fraternals has increased markedly.

With this ideas and knowledge that i gathered here in this article, I think I'm able to add more to your knowledge and understanding about twins, if yes comment, like and share please.
