What actually causes stroke?

It is caused by a damage to the brain due to an interruption or reduction of it's blood supply,preventing the brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients.This results in the death of brain cells by the minute.

It is a critical situation and usually requires immediate medical care.

It is caused by ischemia (loss of blood supply), haemorrhage in the brain.

There are 3 types of stroke: - Transient ischemic attack; This is a mini stroke,it can also be called a warning stroke, which is due to a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain and may last for about 5 minutes.

- Haemorrhagic stroke: it is caused by leakage or bursting of a blood vessel,they are usually caused by uncontrolled blood pressure,overuse of blood thinners and anticoagulants,trauma and protein deposits in blood vessel walls.

- Ischemic stroke; it is caused by a blocked artery, caused by fatty deposits or by blood clots which leads to a severely reduced blood flow.

The symptoms include, trouble walking, speaking and understanding,paralysis in the face,arm or leg, vision difficulty,memory loss,pain,headache, vomiting and dizziness.

The risk factors include, hypertension,obesity,binge drinking, smoking including second hand smoke exposure, diabetes,sex( men are at a higher risk than women),high cholesterol, age( 55 and above) and family history of stroke.

The treatment methods include,blood thinners, anticoagulant,ACE inhibitors, cardiac monitoring, carotid endarterectomy, speech therapy and physical therapy.

The preventive methods include, monitoring of hypertension and diabetes if you have them, reduction of cholesterol intake,regular exercise and maintenance of a healthy weight.
