Federal hospitals to use Made-in-Nigerian syringes and needles

The Federal Government is geared towards coming up with a policy to ensure that all Federal Government-owned health institutions in the country get and use only Nigerian made syringes and needles.

This was stated by Dr. Osagie Ehanire, the Minister of Health, during a public hearing at the senate chambers.

The Minister of Health disclosed this news when he was asked by the Chairman, senate committee on health, to come up with a specific policy that would save the local manufacturers of syringes and needles from collapse.

The minister went on to tell the panel that the Ministry of Health will see to it that the Federal Executive Council approves the policy in the next few weeks.

On the other hand, the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye told the panel that the local manufacturers of needles and syringes in Nigeria do not have the capacity to produce the required quantity needed in Nigeria hence importation of the shortfall by licensed agencies.

Reacting to what the DG of NAFDAC said, the president, Medical Device Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Akin Oyediran, said the NAFDAC boss was relying on old data as all the seven licensed local manufacturers have the potential to produce 2.4billion units of syringes every year if they are provided with favourable business environment.
